Dislocation of the lens into the vitreous can be easily detected by ultrasound. The lens is an extremely good reflector of sound. Its characteristic oval shape and acoustic shadowing qualities present a classic image. Voluntary movement of the globe will often demonstrate sliding or tumbling effects of the dislocated lens within the vitreous cavity, as in this case of a dislocated hypermature cataract.
